Interview with Hutch Dano

In "Zeke and Luther" you played the role of Zeke Falcone, a talented skateboarder. Are you keen on skateboarding also in real life? If not, what are your favourite sports and activities?

Unfortunately, not. While I did skate for a little bit, I preferred surfing in high school. As I get older, the time I would spend surfing is usually taken up by my interest in art and painting.

Apart from being an actor, you are also a talented abstract painter. Your paintings are mostly connected with nature, but there are also works like "Robot Revolution" or "Curiosity". What are your main inspirations as an artist?

My main inspirations are Jackson Pollock and Jean-Michel Basquiat. I also love Mark Rothko.

A lot of people still find abstract painting weird and really difficult to explain. How people should read abstract paintings to understand them well in your opinion?

The reason I do abstract art is because it doesn't necessarily need to be understood. I just hope it makes people feel something.

You and Matt Shapira are the writers of the thriller "Sunflower", which tells the story of the disappearence of a writer called George Boulangé and the investigation about this case. When did you come up with an idea of making this project?

Matt Shapira had the idea and we worked on the script together, I'm hoping it comes out in 2017.

Next year we will see you in the horror movie about Bigfoot called "Hoax". I know that you cannot tell much before the premiere, so I want to ask you about something else: What are your favourite memories connected with watching horror movies? Do you like this genre?

Watching the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" films with my dad. I love this genre. Horror movies are my absolute favorite.

You participate in many projects connected with both acting and painting, you also started selling special t-shirts with Dano's signature. What can we expect from you in the future - more acting, more painting or maybe something completely different?

I have three project in post productions, "Behind the Walls", "Sunflower", and "Hoax". As well as a guest star on CBS' series "Training Day". I look forward to doing more acting, painting and expanding my clothing line.

Crush of the Week: Hutch Dano. by Teen Mag Jul 21, 2010

You know Hutch Dano as Zeke on Disney XD's Zeke and Luther. But this week he'll be playing Selena Gomez'scrush Henry Huggins in Ramona and Beezus (opening Friday, July 23). TeenMag got to hang with Hutch and he opened up about what it was like working with (and kissing) Selena and what he looks for in a girlfriend - so you'll want to pay attention!

TeenMag: Did you know Selena Gomez before filming the movie?

Hutch Dano: I knew her well enough that I was able to text her after I booked the part. I didn't tell her I was up for it; you don't want to say anything just in case it doesn't happen. So I decided I would text her if it happened and when I got it. I went on the set of Wizards of Waverly Place a lot in my first year of Zeke and Luther

TM: How was filming the kissing scene with her?

HD: It was very professional. We talked about how we wanted to do it. We wanted it to be a very intimate sweet moment. This kiss was built up for 15 years and Henry wasn't quite able to tell Beezus how you felt. What was so great about it was that all of Henry's feelings all come out at once - he goes for broke. So I think that's what the kiss was about . . . him finally being able to tell her.

TM: What's your advice for a girl, who has a crush on a boy?

HD: I am always about being upfront. You go for broke, that's the only way to do it. Playing games never seems to work and it only seems to postpone either what could have been - you could have been together for eight months rather than two because you decided to play games for six months. Or find out that they're not interested and have a little bit of heartbreak rather a lot from building it up. So I always say be upfront.

TM: Who was your first crush?

HD: I was in second grade and it was at day camp. Her name was Holly. I burned her CDs of songs she liked and then I would play them for her. She always thought I was so sweet. I was in second grade and she was in fifth. I was already at a disadvantage. I did everything and she never liked me back.

TM: What do you look for in a girl?

HD: I look for a girl who is genuine, down to earth. I like a girl who is nice, funny, and I think the biggest one is someone who is not afraid to be herself completely. Don't try to hide anything - you are who you are. The person will either love you for it or they don't.

TM: Do you have any dating deal breakers?

HD: The only deal breaker for me is that I have a big thing with honesty and being honest about who they are. There is always that case of someone trying to be someone else for the guy that they like or for the girl that they like, and that's not how you should do it. Opposites can attract but you don't want to put up an image for the rest of your life just to be with someone. That's not how it should be.

TM: What is your idea of a perfect first date?

HD: I'm pretty old fashioned dinner, movie, and to end it probably a walk on the beach. That would be really nice to me. I really like the beach.

Are you planning on checking out Ramona and Beezus this weekend? Where would you want to go on a date with Hutch?

Hutch: Selena is such a sweet girl, she is down to earth and not scared of making a fool of herself. Hutch: You know, Selena really freaks out when someone prank calls her so i called her in the middel of the night and i was like „Yo, this is Barney and i miss my friends“ it was pretty lame but she was freaking out because she thought i was some random person calling her. That would be Lost. I love everything about it and it’s such an addicting show!! The cast is awesome, the writing is amazing. Plus, I kind of have a crush on Evangeline Lilly, haha.

I would like to work with Jennifer Aniston.

Kidsday interviews actor Hutch Dano

By PATRICK HOFFMAN, NICOLE LUCIANO, PAUL NIGRO AND JESSICA ZWEIGBAUMKidsday Reporters, Age 11, Hauppauge and Smithtown August 12, 2010 8:04 PMWe interviewed actor Hutch Dano, star of Disney Channel’s movie “Den Brother” in Manhattan recently.

https://www.newsday.com/lifestyle/family/kidsday-interviews-actor-hutch-dano-1.2204868

What can you tell us about “Den Brother”?

Well, “Den Brother” is about Alex Pearson. He’s a 17-year-old hockey player. I was 17 when I shot the movie. He’s extremely egotistical. He thinks he’s great. You know how someone thinks that they’re really cool and then if they’re not it’s even lamer? Kind of like that. He loves his sister and he’s really nice to her. And he’ll practically do anything for her. So you kind of can tell he’s a nice guy even though he’s got this random bravado for no reason. He eventually has to take over the troop, which he didn’t want to do in the first place and he has no choice because he loves his sister, so he’s going to do it no matter what. And by the end of the movie he’s kind of realized that it’s a good thing to do things for other people; that it doesn’t have to be a chore.

In your movie was it a good thing for Alex Pearson to get suspended so he could be the leader of the Bumble Bee troop? Did Alex really like Matisse Burrows (actress Kelsey Chow)?

For him as a person it was a good thing, but he didn’t think so at the time. All he cared about was himself. All he wanted to do was to play hockey, he wanted the showboat, he wanted to be the best. And when he gets suspended, and then he has to go out and help his little sister by being the den brother he kinds of slowly but surely learns that there’s more to life than just caring about yourself. You asked how much Alex likes the girl, yes. He likes her a lot. He likes her enough to change. He likes her enough that he kind of becomes a cooler person. I think she had a big influence on him, too.

Do you like being picked for all the shows and movies you’re on now?

I’m grateful for it. For the most part, with “Den Brother” they came to me with the script... I’d say it once again, I love “Zeke and Luther” and “Zeke and Luther” got me to “Den Brother” and before that it got me to “Ramona and Beezus.” Everything just kind of went in a circle; kind of went around each other. I would definitely say that.

How well do you ice skate?

I’m good now. I was horrible when I started. I had a couple months to train for the movie and it was embarrassing — you know how you kind of go out on the ice and you have to hold onto the wall. After about one or two weeks I got the hang of it. I started learning all the things I know, the hockey moves, all the stops, going backwards. I learned a lot from my coach.

What is your relationship with you and co-star Adam Hicks?

It’s great. Adam -- he’s so different in real life. He plays this crazy zany character. But he’s so relaxed in real life. It’s actually a really cool thing, but we really clicked from the audition and we just become better and better friends.

What parts do you play on “Ramona and Beezus”?

I play Henry Huggins. He is the love interest to Selena Gomez’s character Beezus. He was a long time friend. They’ve known each other since birth and he just now realizes how much he likes her. So it kind of puts him in this awkward -- he really doesn’t know what to do about anything and then he gets forced to by the end of the movie, to really tell her how he feels. He definitely has a little bit of an impact as far as their relationship together.

In “Zeke and Luther,” what episode was your favorite?

I have to say when Zeke jumps the shark is probably one of my favorite ones just because I hate sharks so much. So when I read the script I went there’s not going to be what’s happening. It was just a really fun episode and we filmed at midnight down in Rodondo Beach. Did you ever watch that episode? We shoot out like at midnight, dark and we shoot out in the water, like at midnight and the shark tips our boat over and we have to like swim out of the water. It was just — it was a lot of fun. It was something Zeke and Luther had never done. It was a lot of fun.

Do you like being on the show?

Oh yeah. It was the first job I’ve ever booked. The whole cast, the crew, for a lack of a better word, they’re just like a family. We’ve all known each other for so long. Not many people have really changed from the beginning of the pilot to now. I love it. It’s everything I kind of dreamed of having as far as if I booked an acting job.

Did you ever dream about being a TV star?

I dreamed of being, of acting professionally. Of doing what I wanted to do. I never knew what that entailed, like what would come with that. There’s so many different parts, there’s so many different shows, movies. I love “Zeke and Luther.” I’d love to do movies. So “Zeke and Luther” is probably the best thing I could possibly have gotten for the beginning of what I hope to be a long career for me.

How long have you been skateboarding?

I started skateboarding when I was about 12 or 13. I had a date with a girl and I had no bus money, so I took the skateboard out and I tried to skateboard. And I thought it would be real easy. I think it took me 31/2 hours to learn so I missed the date with the girl, but I did learn how to skateboard. Once again, a girl has taught me something even though I didn’t hang out with her.

Did you ever play any sports on a team?

I was on the swimming team, which was the only thing I think I did like team wise and that was fun except for the fact that you’re not allowed to eat beforehand, when you swim because it’s not good for you. I think one time I brought like a burger from somewhere, from Burger King or somewhere and the coach made me throw it away and then he called my mom and told — so that she wouldn’t give me money anymore so I could go get a burger. So I was kind of hungry on the swimming team a lot, which that wasn’t fun. I like swimming, but I don’t like it that much. I would rather eat.

What is the thing you’re most scared of?

Sharks would probably be it. I’m afraid of dolphins in the water until I see that it’s a dolphin. I would say sharks. I’ve seen "Jaws" too many times so at that point you just get -- you start to look down. For me I’m a surfer too, so I’m not exactly a fan of sitting in the water. I’d definitely say sharks.

Do you have a lot of down time, or does being in a lot of shows and movies make you busy?

It makes me busy a lot, but I usually have the weekends off. So I usually have a couple of days to kind of go do whatever I want . . . I try to go see movies and just hang out with my friends because on the weekdays I work really late. So I usually can’t hang out with them. So, yes on the weekdays for sure. It takes away all my free time, but on the weekends you shouldn’t have a lot of free time anyway. It’s OK.

A Conversation With ‘Zombeavers’ Star Hutch Dano

 Warning May Contain Spoilers

I had the pleasure of interviewing Hutch Dano, who plays Sam, in 2014 horror-comedy ‘Zombeavers’.

In ‘Zombeavers’ Hutch’s character Sam, isn’t the nicest guy. Sam’s a little shady and he cheated on his girlfriend Jenn (Lexi Atkins), with someone very close to her, but let me say this, Hutch and his character are very different, he’s a very nice guy in real life.

KM “How did you get your start in the entertainment industry?”

HD “It all started in theater. In the fifth grade I was in ‘The Wizard of Oz’, I played the ‘Cowardly Lion’ and I knew I wanted to act.”

KM “How did you get involved in ‘Zombeavers’?”

HD “I was driving home and got a call from my agent saying he had an audition for me the next day. When I got home I looked at the synopsis for the script. After a long pause I called my agent and asked “What is this?” . I went to the audition for the part of Tommy, played by Jake Weary, after the audition they offered my the part for Sam.

KM “Can you tell us a little about your character in ‘Zombeavers’?

HD ” I play Sam, he’s the type of someone you love to hate. He’s kind of the “Cartman” of ‘Zombeavers’. If I could call anyone a “douchebag”, it would be him.”

KM “What was your favorite part in ‘Zombeavers’?”

HD “That would have to be Rex Linn’s character Smyth. He’s a hero, he’s got a gun and he’s trying to protect the girls. I was rooting for Rex’s character. Rex is so fun to watch both on and off the screen.”

KM “How do you feel about the way ‘Zombeavers’ is being received by fans?”

HD “I love it. Life is hard, people want to come home and watch a movie and escape. I’m honored to be a part of that. I’m just as proud of this movie as I would be for a movie that’s won an Academy Award.”

 KM “What’s next for you”

HD “I have two movies in post production. Sorry, I can’t say their names yet. They will be out in late 2015 or early 2016. I am also producing a movie that’s in pre-production.”

Hutch told me that a certain horror legend is in talks to play a character in the movie he is producing, but I can not reveal the actor’s name at this time (it’s a good one).
